Several major Region employers scored highly on the Best Places to Work for Disability Inclusion, an annual ranking by the Disability Equality Index that assesses how friendly workplaces across the country are to people with disabilities.
Cargill, which has operations in north Hammond and at the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor, BMO Harris, which has several local branches, Meijer, Walmart and CVS all scored 100.
Unilever, which has a soap-making factory in north Hammond, scored 90 percent. Ford, which operates the Chicago Assembly Plant in Hegewisch and the Chicago Stamping Plant in Chicago Heights, and Norfolk Southern, which has a rail yard in Hammond, earned scores of 80 percent.
“We applaud those companies that choose to take the DEI year after year and truly commit to advancing disability inclusion,” said Jill Houghton, president and CEO of Disability: IN, a joint initiative of the American Association of People with Disabilities and Disability: IN. “Although we are far from true inclusion of people with disabilities across the enterprise, the DEI signals corporate America is recognizing inclusion as a competitive edge and beneficial for all.”
The index is designed by business leaders and disability advocates to be a benchmarking tool. It looks at accessibility, employment, organizational culture, leadership, community engagement, support services and supplier diversity.
