The woman caller told a Scioto County Sheriff’s 911 dispatcher Thursday afternoon that she shot a man who had been trying to break into her Blue Creek area home.

When deputies arrived at the home in the 3700 block of Mackletree Road, they found Michael Bashaw, 34, of West Portsmouth, in the backyard, dead from a single gunshot wound to the chest. Blue Creek is about 15 miles northwest of Portsmouth.

Further investigation found that there was a prior connection between Bashaw and the female resident. Bashaw was convicted in Portsmouth Municipal Court in March 2018 for domestic threat, a misdemeanor charge, the sheriff’s office said.

In addition, from July through September, there had been a civil protection order, issued by a Scioto County judge, prohibiting Bashaw from having contact with the woman.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s office will perform an autopsy. The fatal shooting is being considered a case of self-defense, the sheriff’s office said, but the Scioto County prosecutor’s office will make the final determination.
