Gas leak near Nationwide Arena evacuates businesses, cancels Columbus Blue Jackets practice

A reported gas leak Monday near Nationwide Arena has caused some nearby businesses to evacuate and led the Columbus Blue Jackets to cancel practice.

The Columbus Fire Department and workers for Columbia Gas of Ohio are on the scene, Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Steve Martin said.

Bucca Di Beppo, Veranico Kitchen and Provisions and Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant are among the businesses being evacuated, Martin said. Nationwide Arena also has been evacuated, and Nationwide Boulevard near the arena is closed to traffic.

It’s due to a gas leak near the arena, I was just told. Nationwide Blvd. is blocked off. https://t.co/CEp8PJEWoH

Martin said the cause of the possible leak is not yet known. He said people walking in the area near the arena’s loading dock smelled gas and reported it.

Columbia Gas has crews on the scene to investigate the cause of the odor and determine if there was a leak, said spokesman Dave Rau.
