A 43-year-old Hilliard man died earlier this week as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash, Columbus police said Friday.

Stephen R. Payton died Tuesday evening at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center.

Police said Payton had been driving a motorcycle southbound on Gantz Road on the West Side of Columbus near Grove City at around 10:24 a.m. on June 8.

Payton lost control of the motorcycle, crossing the double yellow line into the northbound lanes of traffic, police said. He left the roadway, crashing in a ditch in the front yard of a home on the 2500 block of Gantz Road.

Payton was thrown from his motorcycle and hit a fire hydrant.

Medics rushed Payton to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in critical condition, but he died three days later.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

A crash report indicated Payton was believed to have been traveling at about 20 mph faster than the 45-mph posted speed limit on the roadway.

It is the 20th fatal crash within the city in 2019 and the 24th traffic fatality.
