NEWARK — An 18-year-old Newark man is being held on a $1 million bond in the shooting death of a 12-year-old girl.

Keegan W. Mummey, of Newark, was charged with aggravated murder in Licking County Common Pleas Court on Monday morning, according to court documents.

Newark police were called just after 9 p.m. Saturday to a house on the 1000 block of Ridgelawn Avenue on the city’s west side about a shooting.

“Oh my god!” the caller screamed through tears. “My sister got shot in the head! Please hurry!”

There, officers found Isabella M. Barnes, wounded and unconscious. Barnes was transported to Licking Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police said Mummey walked onto the porch where Barnes was sitting, put a gun to her head and pulled the trigger. Mummey then fled by bike and likely discarded the weapon. He was arrested by Hebron police along Route 79.

Assistant Licking County prosecutor Paula Sawyers said witnesses told investigators that Mummey approached the front porch with intention.

“This was not a random victim,” she said. “There is no way this was accidental.”

Sawyers said Mummey and Barnes dated at some point, but it’s unclear how recently they were together. Depending on the nature of their relationship, given their age difference, Sawyers said additional charges may be filed.

“It’s just a horrible waste of life,” Sawyer said.

At his arraignment late Monday morning, Mummey, who appeared via video from the Licking County Jail, told Magistrate Mattie Klein that he has a tendency to blackout and doesn’t remember the incident.

Newark police were searching for the weapon along Route 79. Sgt. Clint Eskins said officers hadn’t located a weapon Monday afternoon but planned to keep searching the area.

Police are asking anyone who finds a weapon to call 911 immediately, and anyone with information about the fatal shooting to call 740-670-7215.
