One driver was killed and another was hospitalized following a head-on crash Monday afternoon near New Albany, the Franklin County sheriff’s office said.

A 2006 black Saab 9-3 was traveling northbound on Route 62 just south of Walnut Street in Plain Township about 1:03 p.m. when for unknown reasons the compact executive car crossed the centerline and crashed head-on into a 2014 Ford E-series van that was traveling southbound, the sheriff’s office said.

The man driving the Saab was transported to Mount Carmel East Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The sheriff’s office was withholding his name Monday pending notification of family.

Timothy Whalen, no age available, of Columbus, the driver of the van, was transported to Mount Carmel East Hospital in stable condition.

Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash, the sheriff’s office said, and there was no immediate indication that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation, the sheriff’s office said.
