Columbus Police are asking for help in locating a 40-year-old homeless man wanted for a pair of sexual assaults near Ohio State University last week.

The assaults occurred on the morning of July 28, within hours of each other. The first involved a woman who was sleeping in a car behind a home on East 16th Avenue at about 4:30 a.m. She told police she awoke to find a man in her vehicle, touching her legs and making sexual advances.

The woman left the vehicle and the suspect fled, police said.

About five hours later, a female student was walking her dog between East 11th and Chittenden avenues when she was approached from behind and groped, police said.

The woman yelled for help and the man ran away.

In both cases, the suspect was wearing American flag shorts.

Both women provided descriptive details of the suspect to police.

Based on that information, Columbus police said they identified Johnny Lee Maynard as a suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest.

Court records show Maynard has been charged with gross sexual imposition.

Anyone with information about Maynard  is asked to call Columbus police at 614-645-4545 or email Det. James Yoder at [email protected]
